Originally built as residential homes in the 1820's, the three buildings, which are now The Howard, are part of the city's New Town. A classically elegant hotel both outside and in, it has just 18 luxury rooms and suites. Each room is named after an Edinburgh street or district. They have used rich, colourful, contemporary fabrics to create a traditional look. All of The Howard's luxury hotel rooms are full of character. The rooms come in varying proportions and can be double or twin. Bathrooms are ensuite and intricately thought-out, some with separate showers.
Every guest has a Dedicated Butler who will tend to your every need – from unpacking your bags and serving afternoon tea in the Drawing Room to co-ordinating your social itinerary and serving a three-course dinner in your suite, so that you can totally relax.
As a small boutique hotel they do not have facilities on site, although they can organise Day Passes for Bannatyne's Leisure Club, a 5-10 minute walk from the hotel.
The Howard has its own intimate restaurant, The Atholl. The Atholl started life as a private dining room for guests staying at the hotel. Its elegant, flower-filled, Georgian setting, intimate atmosphere, fine wine list and expertly prepared modern Scottish menu drew an enthusiastic and knowledgeable local clientele as well, so the Atholl has gradually evolved into a sought-after restaurant. The restaurant only seats 14 people at a time, so be sure to reserve in advance.
As an alternative, if you are staying at The Howard, you can order from the 24-hour room service menu.
Pre-dinner drinks and nightcaps are served in the hotel drawing room - a lovely space with curving, barrel-shaped walls and deep knole sofas to sink into after a hard day's shopping or sightseeing.
